Success Story: How I Shed the Weight and Changed my Life

How Marsha Parker Lost 155lbs

Marsha Parker's struggle with weight gain began after she gave birth to her daughter Kumari. As a single mother to a newborn, she faced overwhelming pressure, and it took a negative toll on her health and happiness. Parker started working a lower-paying job with flexible hours to take care of her daughter, and most of the money she made went towards feeding and caring for Kumari. The New York-based mother began eating inexpensive, fast food, usually $1.25 fried chicken, to satiate her hunger in the Bronx.


As her daughter continued to grow, so did the number on Parker's scale. When Kumari turned five, Ms. Parker had reached 290lbs. She had developed high blood pressure and was diagnosed as pre-diabetic. She also commonly experienced headaches. Parker shared with People Magazine that she felt highly stressed throughout the period she was gaining weight and went through postpartum depression without realizing it.


When Parker noticed the toll, her health was taking on her daughter, she decided something needed to change. She began exercising frequently and started taking kickboxing classes. She altered her diet to involve more clean eating by drinking green smoothies with her daughter and prioritizing lean proteins such as fish, chicken, and eggs. Through her experience, she developed a passion for weightlifting.


Marsha Parker’s journey helped her shed 155lbs, bringing her down to a healthy 135lbs. She now continues to balance workouts five days per week and works as an online teacher while homeschooling Kumari and taking her Ph.D. classes. Now that she doesn’t have to stress about her health and her diet’s influence on her daughter, Ms. Parker can lead a happy and healthy life and has created a well-balanced lifestyle.

"I was stressed and I think I was going through a bit of postpartum depression without realizing it," she says. "Kumari would be asleep and I would be crying, eating chocolate pudding and drinking Pepsi. I would buy foods that I knew were bad, but they gave me comfort at the time."


"I would have headaches from the food and she would say, 'I need you to be healthy, I'm really, really worried about you. Please eat healthy.' I realized that my health was connected to her wellbeing."
